3 Celebrated Dutch Cinema Stars

Dutch actors offer splendid candidates for international blockbusters. Thanks to their natural command of English, these three have gone beyond the borders of their homeland to gain fame and acclaim across the world in super-budget productions.

Silvia Kristel

Born in Utrecht in 1952, she is mostly known for her lead character in four of the seven Emmanuelle films. Kristel began her career by modeling, and gained international acclaim in the early 1970s with her role in the previously mentioned soft-core movie. She moved to Hollywood in 1979 and appeared in productions like The Nude Bomb and Private Lessons, a movie that grossed over $50,000,000 worldwide. Kristel died in 2012 four months after suffering a stroke.

Famke Janssen

Famous for her role of superhero Dr. Jean Grey in the Marvel Studios film saga X-Men, she is one of the highest ranked Dutch actors in Hollywood today. Janssen was born in 1964 in Amstelveen, and 20 years later moved to the US to start her modeling career. As a model, she took part in campaigns for Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, and Victoria's Secret. In 1995, Janssen rocketed to fame after appearing in Pierce Brosnan's first James Bond film, GoldenEye, as femme fatale Xenia Onatopp. In 2000, she played Phoenix in the X-Men saga, winning a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Rutger Hauer

Blonde, blue-eyed, tall, and handsome Dutch actor Rutger Hauer has an international reputation for playing everything from romantic leads to action heroes to sinister villains. Hauer was born in Breukelen, a town in the province of Utrecht, the Netherlands. His career began in 1969 with the main role in the Dutch television series Floris, though he found cinematic fame after when Paul Verhoeven cast him in Turkish Delight. His film credits include Blade Runner, Escape from Sobibor (for which he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor), Sin City, Batman Begins, The Rite, and many others.
