3 Essential Road Movies of the 2010s

Celebrating the premiere of the Italian comedy, The Greek Affair, in which a young man sets on a journey across Greece to follow his dreams and discover the secrets behind modern philosophy, we have selected three must-see road movies of the past decade.

American Honey

Directed by Academy Award-winning director Andrea Arnold, and starring Sasha Lane, Shia LaBeouf and Riley Keough, American Honey became the quintessential youth road movie. In the film, an adolescent girl from a troubled home runs away with a traveling sales crew who drive across the American Midwest selling subscriptions door to door.

The film was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival where it won the Jury Prize. American Honey also received positive reviews, with Lane's performance receiving critical praise and accolades along with those of LaBeouf and Keough.

Green Book

Set in 1962, Green Book is a road movie with a moral. Inspired by the true story of a tour across the Deep South by African American classical and jazz pianist Don Shirley and Italian American bouncer Frank Vallelonga who served as Shirley's driver and bodyguard. Through superb performances of award-winning actors Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen, Green Book delivers a raw portrait of the harsh racism within the US society in the 1960s.

Green Book received plentiful awards and nominations, and at the 91st Academy Awards, it won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Ali. The film also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Nebraska

One of the most beautiful road trip movies in the past decade, Nebraska follows a unique story of hope, dreams and forgiveness. After receiving a lottery letter in the mail, an irritable father thinks he's struck it rich and wrangles his son into taking a road trip to claim the fortune. Shot in black and white across four states, Nebraska tells the stories of family life in the heartland of America.

Nebraska was nominated for the Palme d'Or (Grand Prize) at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where Dern won the Best Actor Award. It was also nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Dern, Best Supporting Actress for Squibb, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.
