3 Famous Movies About Wrongful Convictions

Injustice is one of the topics that upsets and engages viewers the most. To celebrate the airing of the Italian film, The Fugitive, about a young man on the run for years while trying to prove his innocence, we have selected three must-watch movies about wrongful convictions.

The Green Mile

Based on a Stephen King novel and starring Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan, The Green Mile follows a death-row officer who meets a good-hearted prisoner named John who, under supernatural circumstances, reveals that he has been wrongfully convicted. Told in a flashback format, the movie is set during the Great Depression in the U.S.

The Green Mile received positive reviews from critics, and was nominated for four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Michael Clarke Duncan, Best Sound, and Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published.

The Fugitive

One of the greatest action movies of the 1990s, The Fugitive stars Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones in the main roles. The production tells the story of Dr. Richard Kimble, unjustly accused of murdering his wife. While in custody, he escapes after a bus accident to find the real killer while being the target of a nationwide manhunt led by a seasoned U.S. Marshal.

The Fugitive was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture; Jones won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. It was followed by a 1998 spin-off, U.S. Marshals, in which Jones reprised his role.

The Central Park Five

Not a fiction film but a documentary, this production tells a raging story of injustice and racial profiling. The Central Park Five examines the 1989 case of five black and Latino teenagers who were convicted of raping a white woman in Central Park. After having spent between 6 and 13 years each in prison, a serial rapist confessed to the crime.

The Central Park Five won the Audience Choice Award - Best Documentary Feature at the Chicago International Film Festival and many other accolades.
