3 Famous Movies Set in Snowscapes

Everybody dreams of seeing the snow for the first time. It is almost magical when landscapes are covered in white and when the flakes settle in one’s hands. That magic has been a source of inspiration to numerous filmmakers who have set scenes of action, terror and adventure in the snow. These are three famous movies set in snowy landscapes you should see!

Everest

Everest is an engaging movie from the start, for both its plot and the beauty of its setting. The movie was filmed in the Ötztal Alps in Italy for six weeks, a month in Iceland, and then moved to Nepal for another month's shoot.

Adapted from Beck Weathers' memoir Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest, this film stars an ensemble cast of Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson, and Jake Gyllenhaal. Everest follows the story of New Zealand's Robert "Rob" Edwin Hall, who, on May 10, 1996, together with Scott Fischer, embarked on a joint expedition to ascend Mount Everest, and their desperate efforts to survive on the most challenging mountain on Earth.

Everest opened the 72nd Venice International Film Festival on September 2, 2015 and was received with positive reviews by the critics.

The Shining

We all remember the shocking face of a wonderful Jack Nicholson in his portrayal of Jack Torrance in The Shining. Unsettling in a way matched by few other movies, The Shining’s story develops in a mountain hotel surrounded by snow. While most of the interior scenes were shot on studio sets, a few exterior shots were made in Saint Mary Lake and Wild Goose Island, in Glacier National Park, Montana.

For those who haven’t yet seen it, the movie follows a family as they head to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific visions from both the past and future.

Fargo

Set in Minneapolis during the winter, Fargo became a cult classic amongst action film lovers. However, some of the actual snow-white landscapes we enjoy in this movie were filmed in northern Minnesota and eastern North Dakota, due to unusually low snowfalls in central and southern Minnesota the winter it was filmed.

Written, directed and produced by Joel and Ethan Coen, Fargo is a reality-based crime drama set in Minnesota in 1987 that follows Jerry Lundegaard, a car salesman who has gotten himself into debt and is so desperate for money that he hires two thugs to kidnap his own wife. Jerry will collect the ransom from her wealthy father, paying the thugs a small portion and keeping the rest to satisfy his debts. Unfortunately for Jerry, his scheme collapses when the thugs shoot a state trooper.
