3 Famous productions about disasters

Tragedies are never a good experience, but have served us to learn from nature and our mistakes and stop repeating them. In movies, tragedies are also a source of great material for gripping stories. Celebrating the airing of the drama series The Mine Inferno, based on the mine disaster in 1961 in Czechoslovakia, we have selected three productions that nobody should miss, based on famous disasters.

Chernobyl

Its name says it all. Chernobyl is a British drama series that retells the story of the April 1986 nuclear plant disaster that occurred in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Soviet Union), depicting the stories of the people who caused the disaster and those who responded to it.

With a great époque photography, it’s based in large part on the recollections of Pripyat locals, as told by Belarusian Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievich in her book Voices from Chernobyl.

The Impossible

If one would judge by the cast members, nobody would believe this is a Spanish production. Starring Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, and Tom Holland, The Impossible is based on the experience of María Belón and her family in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

The Impossible received positive reviews from critics for its direction and its acting, especially for Watts who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.

The Perfect Storm

Different from the two previous films, which are European, this is an American production with a massive budget for special effects. The Perfect Storm is based on the 1997 non-fiction book of the same name by Sebastian Junger, telling the story of the Andrea Gail, a commercial fishing vessel that was lost at sea with all hands after being caught in the Perfect Storm of 1991.
