3 Great Movies Adapted from Novels

To celebrate the premiere of the French drama The Counterfeiters, based on the novel of the same name by André Gide, Eurochannel has selected three must-see blockbusters that were adapted from outstanding literary works.

Gone Girl

Based on the namesake novel by Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl is a quintessential film when it comes to the subject of missing persons in cinema, and presents maybe the best performances yet seen from leading actors Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. This psychological thriller follows the story of a man that sees the spotlight turned on him when he's suspected of killing his wife after her sudden disappearance on their 5th wedding anniversary.

Pike's performance was praised, and she received nominations for an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, for Best Actress. Additional nominations included a Golden Globe Award for Best Director for David Fincher.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Stieg Larsson and also directed by David Fincher The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo stars Daniel Craig as journalist Mikael Blomkvist and Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander, as they lead an investigation to find out what happened to a woman from a wealthy family who disappeared 40 years prior.

The movie was chosen by National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of 2011 and was a candidate for numerous awards, winning, among others, the Academy Award for Best Film Editing.

The Godfather

Based on the novel written by Mario Puzo and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. This crime thriller, starring Hollywood superstars Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, tells the story of the most important crime family in New York. The Godfather, considered a cinematic masterpiece, centers on the transformation of Michael Corleone - the youngest son of the mafia boss - from reluctant family outsider to ruthless Mafia leader while also chronicling the Corleone family under its patriarch, Vito Corleone.
