3 Great TV Shows Based on Real Crimes & Criminals

Celebrating the new episodes of the Czech crime drama series, Anatomy of a Murder, about a group of detectives who investigate the causes of distressing crimes, we have selected three must-see series based on real crimes and criminals.

Peaky Blinders

The Peaky Blinders were a real-life gang from Birmingham, England, who operated from the late 1800s through the start of World War I. The critically acclaimed British show of the same name took its inspiration from these real-life criminals. Primarily set in the same city, Peaky Blinders follows the exploits of the Shelby crime family. Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Dunkirk) plays Tommy Shelby, the gang's leader, and Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Event Horizon) as Chester Campbell is a commissioned detective from Belfast who is tasked with suppressing the gang.

The series has won numerous awards, including a BAFTA Television Award for Best Drama Series, and has been extended for five seasons.

Mindhunter

This hit series might be fictional, but it's based on the true story of former FBI agent John E. Douglas, who pioneered criminal profiling at the FBI. The character of Holden Ford gives viewers a glimpse at John's career, which involved interviewing some of the most dangerous American serial killers of his decades at the Bureau. On the show, the murderers have been fictionalized, but they're still based on real people.

For Mindhunter, Cameron Britton obtained a nomination in the Outstanding Guest Actor a Drama Series category at the 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Fall – United Kingdom

Starring Gillian Anderson (the legendary Agent Scully from The X Files) and Jamie Dornan (from Shadows in the Sun and Fifty Shades of Grey), The Fall is a British production filmed and set in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In this series, Detective Stella Gibson and serial killer Paul Spector play a game of cat and mouse as she works on it to put the criminal behind bars.

When it came time to create the series’ terrifying killer, its creators took its inspiration from two real-life murderers. Strangler Dennis Rader and Co-Ed Killer Ed Kemper were both an inspiration to create Jamie Dornan's scary criminal, Paul Spector.
