3 Memorable Dancing Movies in Recent History

Celebrating the airing of the Czech film, Burlesque, about a woman who ventures into dancing to escape from her fears and complexes, we have selected three memorable movies about dancing. You won’t be sitting but moving around to the tunes of these productions!

Black Swan

Starring Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman in one of her most acclaimed roles, Black Swan is the quintessential movie about ballet and the toll it takes on its performers. In the film, Portman plays Nina, a young woman desperate to land the lead role in her ballet company’s production of Swan Lake. Throw in an overbearing director, competition in the form of Mila Kunis, and a psychotic mom living vicariously through her daughter, and this is the perfect nightmare ballet storm.

Black Swan premiered as the opening film for the 67th Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2010. It received five nominations at the 83rd Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and winning Best Actress (for Portman).

Dirty Dancing

If Black Swan was the quintessential ballet movie, this is the ultimate couples dancing film. Based on the screenwriter Eleanor Bergstein's own childhood, Dirty Dancing tells the story of Frances "Baby" Houseman, a teenager spending the summer at a Catskills resort with her family. She soon falls in love with the camp's dance instructor, Johnny Castle, and their adventure begins.

Dirty Dancing became one of the most iconic movies of the 1980s and its soundtrack generated two multi-platinum albums and multiple singles, including "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", which won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song, and a Grammy Award for best duet.

Flashdance

Directed by Adrian Lyne and starring Jennifer Beals as a young nightclub dancer who aspires to become a professional ballerina, alongside Michael Nouri playing her elder suitor and the owner of the steel mill where she works by day in Pittsburgh, Flashdance is one of the most iconic dance movies.

Flashdance was received with favorable reviews, and the screenplay was nominated for a Razzie Award.
