3 Must-See Stage Plays Adapted to Cinema

Celebrating the airing of the French thriller Gone, a film adapted from a play of the same name, we have selected three must-see movies based on stage plays that you should watch at least once.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

The Rocky Horror Picture Show took the world by surprise with a mix of rock, dance and irreverent topics ranging from infidelity to androgyny. Starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Barry Bostwick, the movie tells the story of a newly engaged couple having a breakdown in an isolated area. When they seek help at a mysterious house, they must play all the bizarre and funny games of Dr. Frank-N-Furter.

Based on the screenplay of the same name, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a parody tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies from the 1930s through to the early 1970s. Today, the film has a large international cult following and was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2005.

Dial M for Murder

Directed by the great Alfred Hitchcock, Dial M for Murder is a 1954 American crime mystery film that became an instant box office hit worldwide. This crime thriller follows the story of a tennis player who frames his unfaithful wife for first-degree murder after she inadvertently hinders his plan to kill her.

Both the screenplay and the successful stage play on which it was based were written by English playwright Frederick Knott.

Venus in Fur

Directed by Roman Polansky, Venus in Fur is a French erotic drama film based on the play of the same name by American playwright David Ives. In the movie, an actress attempts to convince a director how she's perfect for a role in his upcoming production. He, in contrast, has a growing obsession with the actress, signaling the start of an unexpected power shift.

The film premiered in competition for the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, and in 2014 received five nominations at the 39th César Awards, winning for Best Director.
