3 Must-Watch European Soap Operas

Celebrating the airing of the new Eurochannel exclusive series, Only You, a stirring romantic comedy with hints of soap opera, we have selected three European soaps that nobody should miss. These are emblematic of TV in their homeland and deserve a chance by every soap opera lover across the globe!

Coronation Street

Primarily set in Great Manchester, England, Coronation Street is the world’s longest running soap opera, on the air since 9 December 1960. The program focuses on the everyday lives of working-class people and is noted for its depiction of a down-to-earth collection of characters, combined with light-hearted humor and strong storylines.

Coronation Street has become a significant part of British culture and, in 1987, the legendary rock band Queen paid homage to the soap with the music video for their single “I Want to Break Free,” for which all the band members dressed in women's clothes and that parodied the production’s characters.

Lindenstraße

One of the most traditional TV shows in Germany, Lindenstraße is based on the long-running British soap, Coronation Street, from which it borrows its main premise: depicting the everyday lives of a number of working-class neighbors. Over its three decades on air since its first episode on 8 December 1985, Lindenstraße has dealt with topics such as racism, cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, disabilities, and homosexuality ― being the first TV program in Germany to show a gay kiss.

Thuis

One of the two main soap operas in Belgium, Thuis (which means At Home) has been on the air since 23 December 1995. Alongside with Familie, the other leading soap in the country (for Flemish-speaking Belgium), Thuis has entertained almost three generations of viewers.

As in many other European soaps, Thuis focuses on the day-to-day lives of a group of neighbors on a working-class street, with all of the country’s problems seen from the perspective of a character.
