3 Mythical Vengeful Ghosts in Worldwide Folklore

As Eurochannel broadcasts the psychological thriller Beyond Suspicion, in which the leading character is encouraged by the ghost of her childhood to kill abusive men, we have selected three mythical vengeful ghosts of popular culture and tradition. Some of you might have even seen them!

The Green Lady

Also known as the Glaistig, this is a restless female spirit said to haunt certain locations in Scotland such as Crathes Castle, Knock Castle and Ashintully Castle. In some tales she was murdered in a green dress, and then stuffed unceremoniously up the chimney by a servant. It is said that her footsteps can still be heard as she walks the castle in sadness. The Green Lady might appear to people as a woman of beautiful or monstrous mien, as a half-woman half-goat similar to a faun, or in the shape of a goat.

Onryō

More than a specific spirit, the Onryō refers to a ghost supposed to be able to cause harm in the world of the living, hurting or killing enemies, or even causing natural disasters to exact vengeance and compensate the wrongs it received while alive.

Possibly the most famous Onryō is Oiwa, from the Yotsuya Kaidan. In this story the husband remains unharmed; however, he is the target of the spirit’s rage. Oiwa's vengeance on him isn't physical retribution, but rather psychological torment.

La Patasola

If there’s a common spirit that haunts in and around the South American forests, that one is La Patasola. In the traditional folklore, she was a mother who killed her own son, and was then banished to the woods as punishment. Now she appears – usually to unfaithful or lascivious men - lures them to the depths of the rainforest where she turns into a beast and devours the man.

La Patasola's most notable feature, from which her name derives, is her one leg. She is believed to possess only one leg, which terminates in a cleaved bovine-like hoof.
