Tribute to Jean-Claude Brialy

His extended involvement in New Wave cinema, working with directors such as Godard, Truffaut, Rohmer, but also his acting under the direction of Lelouch, Scola or Buñuel, gives opportunity in this interview to give amusing anecdotes about these artists who became his close friends and to explain their style, evolution and artistic beliefs. Brialy also evokes his relationships to fellow actors: he became close friends with Claudia Cardinale since the first film they made together when she was only 18, and often worked with Jean-Paul Belmondo and Alain Delon.

He has done numerous films for TV, which made him very popular in France, and always pursued a career in the theatre. He reminisces the good times of the literary salons in the 50s, when artists would gather in Bourgeois homes and play music or read poems – he was a best-selling writer himself, with two autobiographies that he partially took up for 2005 his theatre performance: a half improvised monologue about his exciting life and career. Brialy evokes the causes he took up at the end of his life, especially his fight against AIDS with other French personalities. This interview gives both a personal insight in Brialy’s state of mind and private motives, as well as a wise and learned man’s glance over a 50 year long career.
