The Good Solider Shweik (2009)
Ukraine/UK

Director: Robert Crombie, Rynat Gazizov, Manuk Depoyan

Presentation:

Much has been said about the Great War in a multitude of different ways. Numerous statistics have been made, many documentaries filmed, thousands of bullets counted; however few revolutionaries have dared to tell the tale from a fresh perspective. Eurochannel presents an innovative way to learn about the Great War with the mischievous character of The Good Soldier Shweik.

Based on Jaroslav Haseks world-famous comic telling of a common soldier in the Great War, The Good Soldier Shweik is a 2-dimension animation feature film about Josef Shweik, a private who, while wearing his uniform, upheld every letter of the law, every order that was given and was so enthusiastic about faithfully serving the Austrian Emperor that no one could decide whether he was merely an imbecile or if he was craftily undermining the Austrian-Hungarian army's war effort.

Beset with a sly and witty humorous dig at the military The Good Soldier Shweik becomes, during its course, a funny and moving anti-war film perfect for those who relish dark humour.

Synopsis:

The Good Soldier Shweik is an animated adventure following the life of soldier Shweik. Shweik Josef, Czech businessman who must leave for military service to become a soldier. Despite his best efforts and intentions, his hilarious capers seem to lead him only towards certain death. However, Schweik has other ideas – far better than dying in battle for the emperor.
