Loosely based on true events, The Legend of Rita follows the fascinating story of Rita Vogt, an impetuous young woman living in West Germany. She is part of a terrorist and anti-capitalist left-wing commando and keeps her days robbing banks and freeing people from the burdens of money in a consumerist society. It’s the 1970s and Rita believes in a just world, one that must be built with violence if needed. Her emotions are fired by her sense of justice, and her unconditional love for their charismatic leader Andi… But her adventure is just about to start!
One day, things go extremely wrong and Rita finds herself escaping in a motorbike in Paris, killing a police officer on her way out. Her only option is to get into East Germany – a country she has dreamed of for years as a communism believer! However, if Rita wants to stay, she must pay a price and become a “legend,” a secret agent with an identity given by the Stasi, the fearful Secret Service in East Germany.
The Legend of Rita depicts life in both Germanies during the Cold War until the fall of the Berlin Wall, when the European communist block begins to dismantle. Blending to perfection genres as diverse as romance, history and adventure, the movie also serves as a political drama depicting an often-unseen side of East Germany. One where people were happy and enjoyed simple pleasures of life!
