Hearts of Bali: An Interview with Director Johan Nijenhuis

Fresh from the premiere of Love on Cuba, acclaimed Dutch director Johan Nijenhuis sits down to discuss his latest romantic venture, Hearts of Bali, and how his popular "Love on..." series continues to evolve with deeper storytelling and cultural awareness.

What inspired you to choose Bali as the next destination in your "Love on..." series?
It started quite simply, actually. Bali is a beautiful island with incredible visuals—it seemed like a natural fit. But once we committed to the location, our screenwriter Ana Louise van Naarzen made a crucial observation. She said, "This is originally Dutch-Indonesian territory, we need to engage with that history." Fortunately, Ana Louise is of Indian heritage herself, and her family history gave her a unique perspective to weave into the narrative.

How do you balance creating escapist entertainment with addressing serious historical themes?
That's exactly the challenge we wanted to tackle with Hearts of Bali. Yes, it delivers what audiences expect from our "Love on..." films, beautiful cinematography and compelling love stories. But this one goes deeper. We're exploring how to acknowledge the colonial past honestly. Some people have warm, nostalgic feelings about that era, while for others it represents something absolutely terrible. The question became: how do we give both perspectives a place in our collective Dutch consciousness?

What does success mean to you as a filmmaker?
The first step is understanding your audience. In January, people want to escape to something sunny and uplifting. But beyond that, it's about working hard with your entire team to ensure you deliver a quality experience. I always feel the weight of responsibility, when you ask people to invest an hour and a half of their time, you owe them something worthwhile. It's challenging but incredibly rewarding, especially working with this cast of actresses who made the process surprisingly smooth.

How does Hearts of Bali compare to your previous work?
Honestly, with every film I complete, I'm most proud of that one because the hard work is still fresh in memory. But I think this has become our biggest, most ambitious, and most deeply romantic film yet. It maintains the beautiful imagery and love stories that define the "Love on..." brand, but with that extra layer of historical consciousness that makes it more meaningful.

Will there be more films in the series?
Let's revisit that conversation in two months! Making films is always enjoyable, but first let's see how audiences respond to this one. The creative process never stops being fun, but each project needs to earn its place.
