Nikolai Church (1996) Director: Frank Beyer Astrid Protter finds herself at a turning point. Things need to change in her marriage, at work and in society as a whole. She often argues with her brother Alexander, an officer in the State Security Service. Meanwhile in the Nikolai Church, the peace movement is steadily turning into a serious threat for the state, just as Astrid Protter becomes one of their members...
Director: Peter Kahane Daniel, an architect, is lost: his project was rejected because it is not in line with the standardised new buildings. The young architects fight with each other – and resign when, one by one, they grow fed up with the governmental bureaucracy and lack of perspective. Daniel’s wife Wanda loses her courage takes their child and leaves the GDR. Their touching farewell is like an end time melody before the fall of 1989. This film is a stunning allegorical portrayal of the last days of the GDR.
Director: Roland Gräf Dr. Schmith, 40 years old, assistant medical director and specialist in a children’s hospital, wants to do research on preterm delivery deaths but the hospital is not interested in his project. Schmith is disappointed and he feels hampered in his work. He gets in touch with a West German organization and together they prepare his flight to West Germany, just as the hospital manager finally approves his project.
