Presentation:

Europe is one of the most beloved hard rock bands to ever come out of, appropriately enough, Europe. Euochannel is pleased to present a Euromusic special honouring these titans of the Rock and Roll history, starting with their renowned 2008 performance alongside a string quartet in Almost Unplugged. On this special they give tribute to their most iconic music, performing songs like their opus “The Final Countdown”. They also honour their contemporaries in the Rock and Roll hall of fame, playing UFO, Thin Lizzy, and even Led Zepplin’s unforgettable single “Since I’ve been Lovin’ You” and Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here.”

Europe was formed by the rock legends Joey Tempest and John Norum in 1979. Originally called “Force”, Europe attained success, and the name that would be recognized the world over, in the 80s with the release of their unforgettable single “The Final Countdown”. Eventually John Norum left in 1986, and was replaced by Kee Marcello, who would lead the band to release the album Out of this World (1988), with the hit song “Superstitious.”The album enjoyed modest success, and, after the release of Prisoners in Paradise (1991) the band took a break in 1992. Joey Kee went on to his own solo career, and the others pursued their own projects.

They would only reunite after seven long years when they were invited to perform a concert at Stockholm on New Year’s Eve in 2003. This blowout performance heralded the band’s return, and soon brought us their album Start from the Dark (2004). Only Kee was missing, but Europe was still able to embark on a new journey, redefining their sound and creating a new style which would rekindle their worldwide popularity.

Biography:

Europe is a Swedish rock band formed in Upplands Väsby in 1979. Formerly going by the name Force, Europe’s founding members were vocalist Joey Tempest, guitarist John Norum and drummer Tony Reno. Although widely associated with glam metal, the band's sound incorporates heavy metal and hard rock elements. Since its formation, Europe has released eight studio albums, three live albums, three compilations and seventeen videos.

Trivia:

• Europe’s first record deal was granted as the prize for a music contest in Sweden.
• In the band’s early days, while they were struggling to find a record deal, they were told to sing in Swedish and cut their hair. Otherwise, they were warned, they wouldn’t achieve any success.
• In September 1989, Europe did a gig at the Whisky a Go Go club in West Hollywood, California, under the pseudonym Le Baron Boys.
