Shades of Happiness (Onnen varjot, 2005) Director: Claes Olsson Presentation: Complicated, hormonal plots take center stage in the comedy drama, Shades of Happiness. This Claes Olsson film takes a look at how the pressure created by two women and their biological clocks wreak havoc on their relationships and nearly turn their lives upside down. Filled with zany humor and genuine emotion, Shades of Happiness gives a realistic, if a bit satirical, perspective that is both heartfelt and funny. Schoolteacher Paula wants nothing more than to get pregnant and start a family with her therapist husband Jarkko. After her fertility treatment finally seems to be a success, she becomes even more thrilled and obsessed with the idea of a baby. She prepares for the new bundle of joy in any way she can and even stuffs a pillow underneath her clothes to try out her potential baby bump. Jarkko worries for his wife and meanwhile, is treating lofty female executive Helena, who is dealing with her own baby making dilemmas. After having a long, hard career, she feels that having a baby is the next step, but problems with her husband Mikko stop her from getting what she wants. As time progresses, the two couple's lives and issues unravel and at once become further intertwined. Shades of Happiness is a story about love, forgiveness and the joys and difficulties that come with relationships. People must sometimes make sacrifices not only for what they want, but also for what their loved ones need. However, when love is tested, the result may turn out to be the opposite of what you wanted. Synopsis: Paula (Tiina Lymi), an art teacher and her husband Jarkko Tiensuu (Nicke Lignell), a family therapist for the parish have tried to have a child for some years. Helena (Mika Ahlroth) and her husband Mikko Raski (Santeri Kinnunen) are career-oriented people who both work at an IT company. Their relationship is fine until Helena suddenly wants to have a child. The destinies of these couples get mixed in surprising ways after Helena and Paula run into each other at a class reunion. |
