Synopsis:
A young writer, Charles Varnat (Yannick Renier) finally finds a job in a Norman castle as the private secretary for a nobleman, the Marquis of Amblezy-Serac (Daniel Russo). His new master controls the poor and the rich in the area. Varnat is outraged by the abhorrent attitude of the Marquis. He gets closer to his desperate wife. The coup of May 16, 1877 increases the political ambitions of Amblezy-Serac. He wants to win the local elections and uses Varnat for this purpose.
