A Perfect Match (Man zkt vrouw, 2007) Director: Miel Van Hoogenbemt Synopsis: Grumpy, 60 years-old, retired widower, Leopold (Jan Decleir), has never been very good at showing his feelings. His grown-up son hardly speaks to him, and the only company he gets is from his eccentric neighbour, Jules (Wim Opbrouck) who is convinced aliens want to abduct him. So when his long standing housekeeper, Ada (Leny Breederveld) announces she's to return to Romania for good, leaving him to look after himself, he is terrified at the prospect of a future all alone. He decides to take matters into his own hands and find himself a new wife. Delighted at the chance to help, Jules introduces Leopold to dating website, "true love dot com", and signs him up before he can say, "I do". Within a few hours he's a suitable match for 25 women. As Leopold wades through countless blind dates with wildly unsuitable would-be brides, Ada's 25-years old niece, Alina (Maria Popistasu) , turns up from Romania, hoping for a job as his new housekeeper. She has nowhere to stay, so reluctantly he agrees to put her up. Alina proves to be a walking disaster as housekeeper: overcooking everything, ruining shirts and breaking more or less anything in sight. At first, Leopold is exasperated, but gradually he finds himself strangely won over by her indefinable charm. Before long, he starts to wonder if the impossible might be possible. Could Alina be the one? In trying to find the answer to that question, Leopold goes on a journey of self-discovery and, on the way, realises that love does not always give us the answers we expect. |
