Presentation:

What happens when you mix the upbeat music of the 60s and 70s with the hard core punk rock of the 90s? Eurochannel has the answer this month, with the Euromusic special featuring the sensational Bigbang. Bigbang’s ambitious fusion of styles has taken the world of music by surprise. Since their creation in 1992, they have kept even their most loyal fans guessing.

Bigbang is the creation of Øystein Greni’s, and a testament to his audacity and genius. Øystein Greni, who is the lead singer and frontman, was influenced both by the music of his time, and also by that of his father – a musician who played in a soul band and even opened a concert for Led Zeppelin in Norway in 1968.

Despite some early setbacks, the band managed to score a month-long tour in America just a year after its creation. With the little money they gained, the band produced their debut album, Waxed, under their own record label. Since then, Bigbang has seen members come and go, with Øystein Greni remaining the one constant since its birth.

Bigbang reached commercial success after the release of the album Clouds Rolling By in 2000 when the single “Girl in Oslo” became a hit across Europe. Their fame was only enhanced by their eccentric performing style and offbeat lyrics; for instance, when the band decided to release a live production in 2003 called Radio Radio TV Sleep, they decided to prove their incredible proficiency by playing the hit “Girl in Oslo” with five drummers. In March 2011 they released Epic Scrap Metal, their eighth studio album, to a legion of hungry fans and admirers. What boundaries will they cross next? Tune in and see.

Biography:

Inspired by the front-man Øystein Greni in 1992, Bigbang is a Norwegian rock band with English lyrics. Over several years, the band’s lineup has changed several times while always remaining a trio, with Greni being the only constant member. Their name is as unpredictable as their music, and though the exact styling has changed, it is usually written as “BigBang”.

BigBang has been described as "Norway's best live band", with the recording Radio Radio TV Sleep holding the honor of the best selling live album ever to be released in Norway. Following their success, the band moved to the United States to start the production of their album From Acid to Zen, gaining good reviews from even the harshest critics, such as David Fricke of Rolling Stone Magazine.

Trivia:

• Øystein Greni had to sell his Vespa motorbike to finance the production of Bigbang’s second album: Electric Psalmbook.
