This classical singer from Wales has redefined the role of soprano, transforming the old style into a new pop fusion with her hit Love Never Dies. Now the young artist comes to Eurochannel, in the uncut program The Katherine Jenkins Special, an exclusive interview in which Jenkins shows viewers the beauty of the classic and the contemporary. Katherine Jenkins was born in Neath, Wales and attended the Royal School of Church Music. Her talent for music was only equalled by her passion: as a child she won the BBC Radio 2’s Welsh Choirgirl of the Year competition twice, and by the age of seventeen she won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. She graduated with honours, and went on to work as a music teacher before becoming a model. She was named the Face of Wales in 2000 for her efforts, but her true calling always came back to music. After the competition, she began her musical career in earnest, signing her first contract in 2003: a record-breaking six album deal! She has since worked with renowned composers such as Gary Barlow, who created the smash group Take That, and Simon Franglen who wrote for Celine Dion. Katherine was not content to simply imitate the great singers of the past, and so she decided to create her own style. She brings her lofty influences to the table, drawing from the styles of Madonna, Barbra Striesand, Judy Garland, Andrea Bocelli, Placido Domingo and Maria Callas to create a unique fusion of classical music and contemporary pop beats. Her intention is to reshape the classics, update them, and use this new fusion of sound to draw more young people to classical music. Like her favourites, she is always updating herself, constantly working to keep her fingers on the pulse of modern music. 2010 marked the debut of her seventh album, Believe. This album, which has sold over four million copies worldwide, places Jenkins alongside the brilliant Andrea Bocelli, and puts a classical spin on modern hits like Evanescence’s Bring Me to Life and timeless rock singles like Bob Marley’s No Woman, No Cry. It must be heard to be believed. |
