Presentation:

Her music is hypnotizing. Soul beats very well mixed with hip-hop styled lyrics have turned Nneka into one of the most important voices of this century. This Afro-German princess of soul and freestyle rapping seduced both Lenny Kravitz and Lauryn Hill to make their opening shows. Listen to Nneka's beautiful voice -between yearning and rage- and discover her amazing music: an amazing mix of Bob Marley, a Nina Simone and Eryka Badu.

Her debut album Victim of Truth – a passionate mix of hot loops, black consciousness and 21st-century soul music - was received with remarkable admiration by the British media, followed by success across Europe and some Asiatic countries.

Eurochannel invites the viewers to surrender and delight their senses with one of the most exquisite Nigerian-born voices. With lyrics that encourage the careful listener to a deep reflexion about modern days, society and its tendency to oppress the poorest, her music rides you through African day-to-day life. This Euromusic special showcases why Nneka's talent is based on word of mouth, the quality of her albums and the intensity of her live performance.

Biography:

Daughter of a Nigerian father and a German mother, Nneka Egbuna was born in Warri, Oil City in the Delta region of Nigeria at the height of its newfound wealth in the mid 70s.

At the age of 19 she decided to leave behind the African way of life. She moved to Northern Europe, to the industrial seaport of Hamburg in Germany. For the young Nneka, it was a dramatic change, and there remains an intangible quality in her voice that speaks of being a long way from home.

She opened massive shows for Jamaican dancehall bad-boy Sean Paul; then she did it again, this time for even bigger crowds with global hip-hop crossover stars Gnarls Barkley. Add Lenny Kravitz and Lauryn Hill to that list and you get an idea of the sheer reach of the Nneka sound. It's a sound that places her right at the centre of the new revolution in African contemporary music today.

Nneka launched her first album: Victim of Truth in 2005 obtaining good reviews among the specialized musical press. Three years later she launched her second studio record called No longer at Ease, which allowed her to reach fame and the highest positions in Germany and the United Kingdom charts with her hit "Heartbeat". She has been awarded in the MOBO awards in the category of Best African Act.

Trivia:

• Nneka is also popular among African minorities across Europe because of the social and political content of her lyrics.
• She was educated in her early years in a school owned by a petroleum company. Now in her speeches she's critical about the abuse those kinds of companies have done in Africa.
