Synopsis:

A newspaper article comes out with the title "The Haunted chair!” It talks about how candidates for the vacant position in the French Academy were dying suddenly one after the other. The question arises: who benefits from all those crimes? A journalist is intrigued by the article and begins conducting his own investigation. He meets Lalouette (Michel Duchaussoy), an expert in gossip with an attentive ear and Patard (Pierre Vernier), the Permanent Secretary of the Academy who is annoyed at the number of people now dead. Panic and fear set in and suspicions spread.

• Gaston Leroux also wrote the novel which would become the world famous musical, The Phantom of the Opera
• The film is directed by French great, Claude Chabrol and it was his last work.
