Ireland

Director: Garry Keane
Cast: Dermot Healy

Presentation:

Dermot Healy, Ireland’s best known poet and memoirist, is the focus of The Writing in the Sky, a beautiful, dreamlike documentary about art, life, and inspiration. Set in a countryside house in the heart of Ireland, this documentary is a once-in-a-lifetime look into the mind of an author who is, according to novelist Pat McCabe, the creator of the “finest memoir written in Ireland in the last 50 years.”

Dermot Healy was born in central Ireland but moved to the Northern border after his father’s death. This sudden change was so jarring that he resolved to flee as soon as possible; dropping out of the University of Dublin and moving to London. There, Healy kept food on the table however he could, working in pubs and shops and doing other odd jobs.

Thirty years have passed since those lonely days in empty warehouses, and Healy has built a prestigious career as one of the English language’s most beloved writers. Now, Eurochannel invites you to discover for yourself the hidden world behind Healy’s literature.

Synopsis:

This is the story of a house in the Irish hills. It’s a story about a horse and a dog and three thousand barnacle geese, migrating for the winter time. More than that, it’s the story of a writer who has drawn love and inspiration from those things: Dermot Healy, a poet, playwright, novelist and memoirist, has been called “Ireland’s greatest writer.”

Now the life of this national treasure is on display in a moving documentary. The film introduces audience to his home: a place called Ballyconnell, on the wild coast of Sligo. There we meet his dog, Tiny, his horse, Lucky, and even the flock of geese that arrive at his doorstep from Greenland every October for a six month visit. Over these six months, Healy shares the beautiful landscape of his home, and the even more intriguing landscape of his imagination.
