In the same year, Romanian director Radu Mihaileanu, made Train of Life (Train de Vie, France, 1998), a drama that follows a line similar to Benigni's work, but that did not have the same impact. Mihaileanu's film tells the story of a group of Jews during the Second World War, while they organize a fake deportation train to escape from the Nazi. Humor is their only way out. To escape the Germans, the Jewish inhabitants of a village organize a phony deportation train in 1941. In a state of excitement, they tailor Nazi uniforms, learn to speak perfect German, forge false documents, and make up the train, car by car. They act the deported victims, train mechanics, officers and soldiers. And then one night the train leaves, like Noah's ark, leaving behind an empty village... |
