What's life? (C'est quoi la vie?, 1999) Director: François Dupeyron The sad and complicated story of Nicolas, a young man whose everyday life is disturbed by a family tragedy. Nicolas (Eric Caravaca), a poor farmer's son, doesn't know where he fits in. The rural life which he leads with his parents and grandparents is a dull, hard grind. One day, his father sends him to Toulouse. On the way back, he gives a lift to a woman. Maria (Isabelle Renauld) is beautiful and lives up in the hills in a different world. For Nicolas, it's love at first sight. At home, things go from bad to worse. In despair, Nicolas' father commits suicide and farm and family fall apart. Nicolas searches for some kind of job with a future, no matter how small, but nothing he tries work. Up in the hills, there's an abandoned farm. He moves in, retrieves his sister, life begins anew. Thus, Nicolas rebuilds a world and a life for himself and his family. However, there's another reason for being up here: Maria.
