Aki Olavi Kaurismäki is a Finnish script writer and film director. He started his career as a co-director in the films of his elder brother Mika Kaurismäki. His debut as an independent director was Crime and Punishment (1983), Dostoevsky's famous crime story set in modern-day Helsinki. He gained worldwide fame with his movie Leningrad Cowboys Go America. His style has been influenced several directors such as Jean-Pierre Melville and Robert Bresson, as he relies on low-key acting and simple cinematic storytelling to get his messages across.

Taking a cue from a similar program produced in the late '60s to early '70s, the French television series Cinema, of Our Time strives to profile some of the most important filmmakers of the era. This it’s time for a focus on the splendid director Aki Kaurismaki. He discusses his prolific, improvisational techniques over the course of the hour-long program.
