Interview with Claes Olsson (Director)

Why did you want to make a film about the 1960s?

The beginning of the '60s was the time of "innocence", but different things started to happen in the society like the liberation of women.

What were your artistic choices in order to get the right tone of the 1960s?

I wanted to be very careful about all the objects in the film; everything from small plastic things to cars, boats and houses. I wanted to reconstruct the life of my childhood with water skiing, colorful things and popular music.

Would you say that the Finland from the 1960s was a traditional society? What was the place of women at this time?

Finland was a very traditional family orientated society in the beginning of the '60s, still with one foot in the agrarian world. The women were very much tied to their families and the homework, even if they were working outside the house or if they were housewives.

How did you choose your 2 main actresses?

Both Marika Krook and Åsa Karlin, who played Bella and Rosa made their debut on the big screen in this film. I cast Marika in Finland and Åsa in Sweden. They had to be different characters, but have something in common.

What are your plans for the future? Are you working on new projects?

I have finished shooting on my new feature "Dead or Alive", which is about the Finnish civil war in 1918. Now we are editing the film, and it will have its premiere in February 2012.
