Interview with Minna Virtanen (Director) Was it important for you to make a movie with a woman as the main character? This was clearly a story of a woman who realizes that she has been living in a big lie. And now she has to wake up and break out of the dream world she has been living in. In theory, the main character could also have been a man, but in this case I wanted to tell a story of a woman. Why does the husband lie? He is a weak person. He has not succeeded in his life as he wished and so he started gradually to fabricate his total life, until there was no way out. He loved Sonja, but he knew that he could never reveal the truth about himself to Sonja. How is it possible to live with someone without knowing who he really is? This is a question, I am wondering myself. How it is possible that you can't see it? But, as history shows, it is very much possible. In these cases, maybe the people are attracted to each other for wrong reasons. Sonja is clearly a very innocent person who has not been ready to step into the mature, adult life with all the responsibilities it requires. For her the solution is to close her eyes from unpleasant things. She never questioned the life they shared with Kim. It was not adult life. She knew Kim only as well as she chose to, only as well as it suited to her small "bird home". In this sense she was living in a dream world, not in a real world. Kim is clearly a person who needed Laura´s type of innocent person who wouldn´t dare to question his actions. Why is it so important for Sonja to know the truth? This was a wakeup call for Sonja. This is the only way she will learn more about herself and to question her own motives to fall in love with such a wrong person. This is the only way she will eventually find a true love and a mature relationship. Or otherwise she might end up meeting new Kims with continuous disappointments. |
