My Wings (Le Ali, 2008) Director: Andrea Porporati Presentation: He was on a mission for peace but in My Wings, Gianfranco Paglia (Ciro Esposito) faces the worst of humanity and is left paralyzed. The film starring Ciro Esposito, Raffaella Rea, Sergio Friscia, Tosca D'Aquino and Remo Girone is based by the true story of Gianfranco Paglia, a parachutist of the Italian Peacekeepers in Somalia, who was left paralyzed after a guerrilla ambush in Mogadishu. Director Andrea Porporati said: “The film is dedicated to the victims of July 2, 1993. I think the key is in the word of the story which Gianfranco Paglia has summarized his face disability: “They told me I would not be able to move again. I did not believe it.” After Gianfranco’s injury, he could not move even his little finger. The largest and most difficult fight of his life was to move that finger. A battle long fought, day after day, in silence, with the help of his girlfriend and his best friend as well as therapists who helped him. This challenge won that captured me and made me fall in love with his story, and this desire, finally realized, to go fly.” Gianfranco fights to be able to use his body again and not lot let his injury ruin his life. His Russian physiotherapist gives him the key to healing when he says, “To fly you do not need legs, the wings are.” They are the words to help him heal his body as well as his heart. Synopsis: In 1993, Lieutenant Gianfranco Paglia (Ciro Esposito) is about to leave Naples and his girlfriend Joanna (Raffaella Rea), for a mission in Somalia. There, near Mogadishu, the boy joins fellow soldiers trying to control the territory and bring assistance to local populations. On July 2, they are ambushed and attacked with stones and Kalashnikov shots. As he is being taken away from enemy fire, he is hit by the bullets of snipers. That day, three people died and twenty-three were wounded, including him. Now Gianfranco has to learn to live again without the use of his body. |
