Pitbull (2009) Director: Patryk Vega Presentation: Even in beautiful Poland crime runs rampant. This month, Eurochannel is proud to present Pitbull, the story of Poland's toughest homicide detectives and their thrilling lives both in and out of the precinct. Following in the footsteps of legends like Dirty Harry and Kojak, these cops are lone wolves who don't care about protocol or procedure – they only want results. When they work together, they are unstoppable; the challenge is getting them to cooperate. Pitbull took the world of cinema by storm in the April of 2005, earning immediate critical acclaim and international recognition. Though the film's tone differed from its Hollywood cop-genre counterparts, Polish audiences couldn't get enough. The action is set in the heart of Warsaw, where detectives from the Homicide Unit are hot on the trail of a killer who has murdered several Armenian immigrants. To bring the suspect to justice, the officers must contact the infamous Vorvzakonnic, a man known as the "judge of the criminal world." As the investigation heats up, a kidnapper and murderer named Said flees to hide from a revenge obsessed man named Wor. In order to bring his nemesis into the light, Wor sets up a member of the squad named Despero by sending Said's daughter Jemma to seduce him. Based on true stories collected by the documentary filmmaker Patryk Vega, the film includes scenes lifted from the headlines too controversial to be previously shown. Said, for instance, is based on a real-life killer who is even now paying for his brutal crimes in a Polish prison. Pitbull is more than just a crime story; however, it is a deeply psychological movie that shows the hard life of a cop. There are riveting car chases, brutal gunfights, and emotional confessions, but these exciting peaks are punctuated by valleys of red tape, addictions, and paltry wages. For the desperate and dogged officers of the Warsaw Homicide Squad, sometimes the only escape from their misery seems to be switching sides. Synopsis: Pitbull is the dramatic story of five homicide officers. On top of the hardships of law enforcement's most gruesome job, each one of these dedicated detectives has his own personal demons to face. One learns that he is dying only two months before retirement. Another must juggle the demands of the force with those of his greedy ex-wife. The third is an alcoholic torn between two women - his wife and his lover, who is about to have a child. The forth struggles to balance his job with his humanity, wondering if it's possible to be both a good cop and a good man. Finally, the last member of the squad must choose between his heart and his duty as he falls in love with a woman who is being set up as a decoy for a mob hit. Trivia: • Marcin Dorocinski won the Best Actor Award at the Young Film Festival in Koszalin in 2005. Patryk Vega won as a Best Director at the same festival. |
