Sticks & Stones (Courgette – C’est mieux la vie quand on est grand, 2008) Director: Luc Beraud Presentation: For the first time ever, the film Sticks and Stones is coming to America. This intense thriller, based on the novel by French Author Giles Paris, introduces Antoine Fonck, one of France's newest rising stars. This young actor delivers a breakout performance alongside co-star Daniel Russo. Synopsis: Fonck plays Courgette, a naïve nine-year-old boy who must endure life with an alcoholic mother. The boy's talents and love of building new games are continually crushed by her sickness, until one day he finds a gun in the kitchen and accidentally kills her. Horrified by what he has done, Courgette is soon thrust into the harsh realities of life outside of his childhood home, as he must cope with the death of his only family, and survive as an orphan and a murderer. As he struggles to get by, Courgette meets the investigating detective, Agent Raymond (Daniel Russo), a beleaguered inspector who, after the death of his wife, lives with his bitter, resentful teenage son. The relationship that develops brings each of them something that they were missing: Courgette finally has a father, and Raymond has a new son. This dark, but heart-warming story starts with death, but soon becomes a celebration of life. |
