What initially was a trip to check on his father’s health turns into a self-discovery journey to change her life forever. Travel alongside a Greek woman and her daughter in a the poignant drama about the importance of family in A Place Called Home.

A Place Called Home is the debut feature of Greek director Maria Douza, and deals with the subjects of politics, family, migration, and racism. It tells the story of Eleni, a Greek woman living in London who travels home to make amends with her estranged father, who has never forgiven her for moving abroad.

Shot in the stunning Greek countryside, the movie’s protagonists shift swiftly between English, Serbian and Greek, as the film portrays part of Greece’s history in the last 50 years: the Civil War, its diaspora, and the return of its citizens.

Inspired by the Eastern Europe migration wave to Greece in the 1990s, director Maria Douza began writing the story in 2003. In her own words, she wanted to go beyond the standards and “didn’t want to make a story about a war immigrant, who arrives in Greece and goes through all these problems and the racism.” She instead portrays the subject in the wider context of a phenomenon that is associated with humanity and its history.

For its plot and outstanding cast, the film received plenty of accolades including the Astron Best Feature Film Award at the 11th San Francisco Greek Film Festival, and Seven Awards at the 9th Cyprus International Film Festival, including the Golden Aphrodite Award for Best Feature.

Synopsis:
