Interview - Boris Mitic

Pretty Dyana (2003)
Serbia

Director: Boris Mitić

Presentation:

Belgrade, like many other European capitals, is rich in ethnic diversity. Such diversity can be found in almost every neighborhood, and it is what Eurochannel invites you to watch. Welcome to a Serbian Gypsy ghetto to discover what a community of expats are up to and how they play the alchemist's role to turn garbage into money in Pretty Dyana.

Directed by Boris Mitic, one of the new figures of European documentaries, Pretty Dyana is an innovative movie in both its argument and conception. This is Mitic's first time behind the camera as he portrays a community of Gypsies, expelled from Kosovo, who have settled in Belgrade, and how they recycle Citroën's classic 2CV and Dyana into new, strange vehicles.

Made on a tight budget and with very little expectation of success, Pretty Dyana has proved its worth. After an amateur home premiere at the director's house, it went to become the most pirated film across the Balkans and to be screened in more than 40 film festivals, winning awards like the Human Rights Award at the Sarajevo Film Festival and Best Documentary at the Wiesbaden Go East Film Festival, and the Mediawave Gyor Hungary, among others.

This first attempt of Mitic behind the camera proves that the right story, fascinating characters, and a bit of luck can turn one into a successful movie-maker.

Synopsis:

An intimate look at Gypsy refugees in a Belgrade suburb who make a living by transforming Citroën's classic 2CV and Dyana cars into Mad Max-like recycled vehicles, which they use to collect cardboard, bottles and scrap metal. These modern horses are much more efficient than the cart-pushing competition, but even more important - they also mean freedom, hope and style for their crafty owners.
