Eurochannel presents True and Tender Is The North, a film d'époque set in Portugal, in which a woman, Rosamunde, becomes obsessed with discovering the truth about her grandmother – and about her own identity. This fascinating film moves back and forth between the nineteenth century and the modern day to reveal the hidden secret of a mysterious woman. Adapted from a 1987 novel by Portuguese writer Agustina Bessa-Luís, True and Tender Is The North offers a multigenerational story of a wealthy family with a mysterious past and a house on the island of Madeira. Directed by João Botelho, known in Portugal for his controversial films and multiple awards, True and Tender Is The North explores through flashbacks the mystery the Baroness Madalena do Mar. While telling how her life and family changes from 1895 to 1965, the film allows viewers to glimpse the aristocratic Portuguese society of the last century and to consider the drawbacks artists must overcome to achieve their dreams. Welcome to a journey to discover the mystery of the Baroness: Was she a talented actress or a high-profile whore? Synopsis: This is the story of Emília de Sousa, the greatest actress on the Portuguese stage at the end of the nineteenth century. She abandoned her career for several years to become the Baroness Madalena do Mar in Madeira island. She was as beautiful as Sissi, the Empress of Austria, with whom she socialized in the winter of 1860/61. To entertain herself she invented a mystery that lasted for four generations. Rosamunde, her descendant, attempts to discover the secret, leading to tragic consequences. From the novel by Agustina Bessa-Luís. |
