One film in particular reveals that Russian cinema is still audacious, ambiguous and deeply intriguing: Yuri's Day on Eurochannel. Directed by Kirill Serebrennikov -- a renowned Russian theater director turned film director -- Yuri's Day tells the story of Lyuba, a famous metropolitan opera singer who is due to leave Russia to finally settle in Western Europe. Before her departure, Lyuba travels with her son to her home for a final goodbye, and there, the mystery begins. Her son disappears enigmatically and in searching for him, Lyuba must return and live with what she loathes the most. Enriched by a superb performance by Kseniya Rappoport, the film not only tells the story of a mother and her lost son but "also the story of Russia losing its identity, and then finding it again," according to the director. Rappoport's outstanding acting in Yuri's Day won her the Best Actress Awards at the National Film Festival "Kinotavr" in Sochi. Discover one of the most interesting Russian films released in 2008 and take a critical look at the Russian backcountry and at the antagonism between the capital and the province in the country. Synopsis: The successful opera diva Lyuba (Kseniya Rappoport) takes a last trip to the remote town of Yuriev in the middle of nowhere. Wanting to sell all her property here, she uses the opportunity to show her adolescent son, Andrey (Roman Shmakov), where she grew up in order to finally leave her hometown behind forever. Mother and son wander aimlessly through the streets of this alien place until something unforeseen happens and Andrey mysteriously disappears. Trivia: |
