5 Iconic Movies About Prostitutes

To celebrate the premiere of On The Edge, we take a look at the "world's oldest profession" through a bunch of great films featuring iconic characters working as prostitutes.

American Gigolo (1980)
Former gigolo Julian Kaye, who spent 15 years in prison for a murder he didn't commit, now has to pick up the pieces while the detective who placed him in jail tries to solve the case that led to his detention. By getting back in touch with his ex-girlfriend Michelle, his difficult mother, and other sex workers, Julian attempts to make peace with his escort past and the man he is now. He intends to reunite with Michelle, his true love, and is searching for the truth about the crime that landed him in jail all those years ago.

Pretty Woman (1990)
A wealthy businessman and a prostitute make an unlikely couple in this contemporary adaptation of Cinderella. Richard Gere's character, Edward, who makes a fortune by purchasing and dismantling businesses, picks up hooker Vivian (Julia Roberts) while on a business trip in Los Angeles. After hiring Vivian to stay with him for the weekend, Edward and Vivian get closer but soon realize they have a long way to go before they can successfully bridge the gap between their radically dissimilar worlds.

Working Girls (1986)

In order to fund her own business, recent college graduate Molly (Louise Smith) works as a costly New York City escort. She is able to maintain her emotional distance from the clients, who range from ruthlessly opportunistic to incredibly in needy, since she is a lesbian. However, her obvious desire to go beyond her current position irritates many of her coworkers, especially the feisty, street-smart Dawn (Amanda Goodwin) and the scornful madam of the escort service, Lucy (Ellen McElduff).

Belle de Jour (1967)
Catherine Deneuve's stunning young housewife Séverine Serizy struggles to balance her masochistic fantasies with her normal existence with her obedient husband Pierre (Jean Sorel). Séverine starts working there during the day as Belle de Jour after hearing about a high-class brothel owned by Madame Anais (Genevieve Page) from her infatuated friend Henri (Michel Piccoli). She must attempt to return to her regular life after one of her clients (Pierre Clémenti) develops a possessive attitude, though.

Risky Business (1983)
Joel Goodsen (Tom Cruise), a senior in high school, has a blast with his closest friend Miles after learning that his parents will be gone for a few days. Joel employs stunning Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) for a night of pleasure after an attempt to secure the services of a prostitute goes a little astray. The following morning, Joel smashes his father's Porsche and becomes agitated after being shocked by the size of Lana's "bill." A desperate Joel converts the home into a brothel in an effort to quickly raise a large sum of money.
