A Funny Man (Dirch, 2011) Denmark
Director: Martin Zandvliet Cast: Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Lars Ranthe, Lars Brygmann, Malou Reymann Genre: Biography, drama
Presentation:
He was sun and rain, storm and calm. When he took the stage in theatres and films, everybody was left astonished by his unparalleled talent. Eurochannel presents a Danish biopic about one of Europe’s greatest comedians in history. Meet a man who was truly A Funny Man.
Based on a true story and opening in the seductive style of the sixties, A Funny Man uncovers the continuing loneliness that Danish comedian Dirch Passer found himself in after a fast-tracked rise of fame. As he struggled between his own desire to gain critical respect and servicing the audience’s needs, his talent was both a blessing and a curse. This movie covers Passer’s life from his early success days to his death, which became legendary as he was one of the few comedy actors to die on stage during a play.
A Funny Man is the second feature film of Danish filmmaker Martin Pieter Zandvliet, after Applause, premiered by Eurochannel in September 2016. By exploring the inner dramas of the A-list acting scene of the 1950s and 1960s in Denmark, Zandvliet’s portrayal of the comic duo Dirch Passer - Kjeld Petersen reveals a unique perspective on the psychology of many actors of the era. Their lives became a mélange of wealth, women, alcohol and infamy as others around them fed off their success.
This Danish production became a favorite upon release and gained critical acclaim and awards galore. Variety praised it as “handsomely produced and well-acted, especially by lead Nikolaj Lie Kaas,” who also appeared in Angels and Demons. A Funny Man collected, among others, the Best Actor and Best Film awards at the Zulu Awards, one of the most important galas in Denmark; and the Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and many others at the Robert Awards, the Danish equivalent of the American Oscars and British BAFTA,
Discover the captivating story of a man whose talent in comedy became his glory and torment, and who considered his own life had become a running joke, like his characters in more than 200 stage and cinema productions.
