The Man Without A Past |
Three Must-See Aki Kaurismäki Movies Aki Kaurismäki is one of the most important figures of Finnish and northern European cinema, and his movies are always a proof of unique creativity. To celebrate the airing of A Film and Its Era: Le Havre, an insightful documentary, Eurochannel proposes to you three must-see films of this legend of cinema. The Man Without A Past (2002) Starring Markku Peltola, Kati Outinen and Juhani Niemelä, this film is the second installment in Kaurismäki's Finland trilogy, the other two being Drifting Clouds (1996) and Lights in the Dusk (2006). The film follows a man who arrives in Helsinki and gets beaten up so severely he develops amnesia. Unable to remember his name or anything from his past life, he cannot get a job or an apartment, so he starts living on the outskirts of the city and slowly starts putting his life back on track. The Man Without A Past was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002 and won the Grand Prix at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. |
Drifting Clouds (1996) Drifting Clouds is the first installment of Kaurismäki's Finland trilogy and follows a tram driver who loses his job. Soon after, the restaurant where his wife works as a head waitress is closed. Too proud to receive money from the social welfare system, they strive to find new jobs. But they are completely unlucky and clumsy; one disaster is followed by the next. The film was selected as the Finnish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 69th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee; it won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival. Leningrad Cowboys Go America (1989) One of the most praised movies from Aki Kaurismäki abroad, Leningrad Cowboys Go America is a 1989 road movie about the adventures of a fictional Russian rock band (Leningrad Cowboys, consisting of members from the Finnish rock band the Sleepy Sleepers, enlarged with additional musicians) that travels to the United States to become famous. The title came from the Marx Brothers film Go West (1940). After the film was released, the fictional band transformed into a real band. |
